Winner of Liszt Utrecht
First Prize : Yukine Kuroki
(Student at Showa Graduate School of Music)

Thank you for your continued understanding and cooperation with the activities of the Showa University of Music.
At the recent Liszt Utrecht, Yukine Kuroki, a second-year student in the master’s program at Showa Graduate School of Music, Showa University of Music and a student at Showa Piano Art Academy won the First Prize.
Liszt Utrecht started as the triennial International Liszt Competition founded in 1986.  It has built a reputation as one of the world’s most prestigious piano competitions.  As of the edition in 2022, as Liszt Utrecht, the competition has a new structure in place. It was held as the Schubert edition giving attention to Franz Schubert to commemorate his 225th birthday.  The obligatory repertoire included original works of Liszt as well as Liszt’s transcriptions of song cycles and other compositions of Schubert.
Forty candidates from 21 different counties selected by the online selection round (based on video) were invited to Utrecht in January to the live selection round (40 min recital) where 10 was selected for participation in the next.  During September 22nd and 26th at the Festival, they each performed four recitals, one devoted to original compositions of Liszt, one to transcriptions of Franz Schubert, one to chamber music, and one to songs.  On September 29th, the selected three finalists performed with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra at the Grand Finale.

 The winner has concert engagements including concert at Het Concertgebouw in Amsterdam held on October 2, 2022, followed by concerts held in many cities throughout the Netherlands and overseas.  Previous winners include Martyn van den Hoek (1986), Enrico Pace (1989), Igor Roma(1996), Yundi Li(1999), Jean Dube(2002), Vitaly Pisarenko (2008), and Masataka Goto(2011).

Biography

KUROKI, Yukine (Student at Showa Graduate School of Music)
Kuroki first performed with an orchestra when she was seven years old. She has performed in concerts in Japan, Europe, and other countries. In May 2022, she won the First Prize at the Dublin International Piano Competition as the first Japanese.  She has won the Gold Prize in the Professional category at the International Chopin Piano Competition in ASIA, Silver Prize in the Superior Grade, Gold Prize in the G Grade at the PTNA Competition and the Yasuko Fukuda Prize (1st Prize). She has won the Grand Prize at the International Balys Dvarionas Competition for Young Pianists and Violinists (Lithuania), First Prize in the Hanoi International Piano Competition (Vietnam), the First Prize at the Astana Piano Passion International Festival of Classical Music and Competition for Young Pianists (Kazakhstan), and the Most Promising Artist Prize at the Hamamatsu International Piano Academy Competition. She has won the Iwatani Tokiko Foundation’s Foundation for Youth Prize.
She has won the Kanjani Eight’s The Mozart No. 1 Music King Decision Match (twice in a row). She has performed with the Tokyo New City Orchestra, the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Tokyo City Philharmonic Orchestra, the Kanagawa Philharmonic Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra (Ireland) , the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, the Silesian Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, the State Academic Philharmonic of Astana, the Tatarstan National Symphony Orchestra, and the Teatro Giglio Showa Orchestra, among others. She has been invited to perform in Japan and abroad, including international music festivals in Europe and elsewhere. She has received the Chiba City Arts and Culture New Artist Award, the Chiba Prefecture Education Encouragement Award, the Chiba Prefectural Assembly Children and Students Award, and the Chiba City Commendation for Excellence in Education, Culture and Sports for five consecutive years. She is a graduate of Showa University of Music. She is currently a second-year student in the master’s program of Showa Graduate School of Music and a student at Showa Piano Art Academy. She is studying under Fumiko Eguchi.
