About the Competition

The Rubinstein International Piano Competition, named after a piano virtuoso Arthur Rubinstein, is one of the world’s most prestigious international piano competitions and has been held in Tel Aviv, Israel every three years since 1974.  The competition has three Stages. For Stage I, each contestant performs 35 to 40 minute recital program, and 50 to 60 minute program for Stage II.  While repertoire choices for the first two Stages are relatively flexible, which is rarely the case with internationally respected competitions, Stage III requires contestants to perform in three sections; chamber music, classical concerto and grand concerto.  In particular, what is very unique about this competition is the contestants are allowed to add an encore of no more than 3 minutes in all Stages.

For Stage I, 32 contestants were selected in a preliminary screening from 17 countries, from which 16 will advance to Stage II. The six finalists who advanced to Stage III performed three sections (chamber music, classical concerto, and grand concerto) over a seven-day period from March 24.
