Completion of YouTube Video of joint Big Band Jazz performance by West Australian
Youth Jazz Orchestra

Supported by North West Shelf Gas

Wings Over the Pacific 2022 is a collaborative project between the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra (WAYJO) https://wayjo.com/  and the Showa University of Music to keep their ongoing relationship strong during a period of travel difficulties due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The project involved 9 young composers chosen from both organizations: 4 from WAYJO and 5 from Showa). Each composer was instructed to compose 10 bars of music which included a melody and an accompanying bass line. They were not aware of each other’s compositions, but were given a set of pitches to use exclusively to ensure some unity of sound and tonality. The pitches chosen were: C, Db, E, F, Gb, Bb, B.

Once all these melody and bass line compositions were complete, WAYJO artistic director, Mace Francis, arranged them in an order, that made sense to him and orchestrated the compositions for the 17-piece big band instrumentation, adding harmony parts, chords and drum parts.

This sheet music was then shared with both WAYJO and Showa and the big band line up was broken up into 4 sections, to be recorded separately between both groups and countries. WAYJO recorded the rhythm section first, in Perth. The drums, bass, piano and guitar parts were recorded together and then sent to Showa, in Japan, to overlay the saxophone and trombone sections. This was then sent back to Perth for the trumpet section to be added last.

Once all the recording was complete the audio track was edited, mixed and mastered in Perth and sent to the musicians to create a video of them playing their part. Showa recorded their videos in the recording studio and the WAYJO musicians recorded their videos at their separate homes in their home studios. These videos were then edited together with the studio audio added for the best results.

While it is only a short composition and video, this collaboration took several months of work with young musicians and professional artists and arts workers in both Australia and Japan making a truly international and cross-cultural exchange project highlighting the creativity and musical excellence of this next generation of jazz artists.

Both WAYJO and Showa University of Music are truly grateful for this opportunity to collaborate together and the ongoing support of the North West Shelf Gas for making it possible.
