Appreciation for the support throughout the spring semester

September 25, 2020

Dear students, parents, guardians, faculty, and staff,

The spring 2020 semester instruction began with all classes held remotely on May 9, one month later than originally planned.  We then resumed a small number of face-to-face classes including private lessons on June 1 and reopened campus for full-scale face-to-face instruction on June 15.

We recognize the significant challenges that remote learning and teaching posed for our students, faculty, and staff.  Also, the reintroduction of face-to-face instruction with the accompanying implementation of strict hygiene and safety measures, such as frequent temperature checks, hand washing/sanitizing, wearing of face coverings, making use of plastic curtains and acrylic dividers placed additional burdens upon all involved.  We thank you all sincerely for your continued support to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.  Because of your hard work and dedication, all instruction successfully remained face-to-face until the end of the spring semester.

In particular, we wish to thank the parents of our students for their continuing educational support, understanding, and cooperation as the university dealt with the unprecedented challenges posed by the global pandemic.

We observed many universities choose not to allow their students to come to campus from the beginning of spring semester; we saw in the media the sorrows of first-year students who had never set foot on their campuses, never had the opportunity to make friends, and were unable to experience the unique joys of university life.  We too were concerned about resuming face-to-face classes, however, we decided to take the bold step forward towards enhancing the educational experience of our students; in-person interaction is essential in the music world.

We are now half way through the academic year and are optimistic that we will be able to maintain the current format of learning and teaching until the end of fall semester.  The faculty and staff are committed to ensuring the best possible education for our students while we continue our efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19 and work together for the health and safety of our campus community.

We understand that there are students who must work part-time to financially support themselves.  We are asking all students to make careful decisions that will help mitigate the risk of exposure to COVID-19 in social situations outside the campus.  As part of our financial assistance and to promote the health and well-being of students, the cafeteria has been offering a 200-yen dinner option since September in addition to the 100-yen breakfast in collaboration with the Alumni Association “DOREIKAI”.

Showa University of Music is committed to our mission of being an institution where students, faculty, and staff act in concert towards attaining a high-quality musical arts education and engaging in research activities while being dedicated to doing our part for society.  Please let us hear your voice; we would greatly appreciate any comments, suggestions, or opinions from our community.  Together, we will make it through this challenging time.  We greatly appreciate your understanding and continuing support.

Sincerely,

Susumu Yanase, President
Kyosuke Shimoyakawa, Chairman
